Travis Waggoner scattered six hits and struck out six in 6 2/3 innings to lead Rossville to a 3-0 Class A semistate baseball victory over South Newton Saturday in Plymouth.
The victory moved the Hornets to 24-8 and into Saturday’s state championship game at 11 a.m. at Victory Field in Indianapolis against Lanesville, 19-6. Lanesville advanced with a 6-2 victory over Indianapolis Lutheran. The Hornets will be seeking their second state title in school history after winning it all in 2000.
Rossville got 11 hits off South Newton ace Jay Hammel. Mark Soiseth got Rossville on the board in the fourth with a single that drove home Corbin Beard. Matt Homco added an RBI double to score Gabe Grizzle before Payton Dennison drove in Homco with a base hit.
Homco got the final out of the game with a three-pitch strikeout.
Kelton Saylor went 3 for 4 for the Hornets.
South Newton finished 20-9.
The third-ranked Hornets won the sectional title by downing Clinton Central before defeating second-ranked Daleville and top-ranked Hagerstown to win the regional crown.
