One bad inning proved to be the undoing of Rossville in the Class A state baseball championship game at Victory Field in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Lanesville broke a scoreless tie with a five-run fifth inning en route to a 5-1 victory over the Hornets, who finished the year at 24-9.
The Lanesville rally started with a two-out walk to Number 9 hitter Isaac Casabella. Leadoff hitter Greg Daly followed with a perfectly executed hit and run to put runners at the corners. Evan Peele followed with a two-run single, Mitchell Bailey doubled home a pair of runs and Cameron Harvey bloop single plated another run.
Rossville loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but managed to score just once on an RBI single by Nate Clendenen that scored Matt Soiseth.
Harvey allowed Rossville just three hits, including two-out base hits by Matt Homco and Payton Dennison in the first and Clendenen’s run-scoring hit in the fifth.
Homco received the L.V. Phillips Mental Attitude Award.
This was the final game for four Rossville seniors, including Homco, Harrison Whiteman, Trevor Waggoner and Clendenen.
The senior-dominated Eagles, which lost in last year’s state title game to Daleville, finished 20-6.
WILO AM/FM broadcast the game live and the live coverage was streamed world-wide on Clinton County Daily News.
