Two local schools are competing against another school in the BALL’s Can Do Recycling Challenge for a chance to win a grand prize and promote the importance of recycling.
The competition takes place near the BALL facility in Monticello where the three schools will battle to see who can collect the most aluminum cans. This year’s competitors are Delphi Community Elementary School, Rossville Elementary School and Tri County Primary School.
As a part of the contest, the elementary school students are reading “The Girl Who Recycled 1 Million Cans,” which intends to teach valuable lessons about recycling, math, teamwork and perseverance.
Community members may save empty aluminum cans and send them to their participating school with their student, ask friends, family or local businesses to save their cans for the school or even collect cans at sports games or neighborhood gatherings for the school.
The schools will be ranked based on the total number of cans collected with the first-place school receiving $2,000, the second-place school receiving $1,000 and the third-place school receiving $500. The schools will also keep all the proceeds from the cans collected.
Cans may also be delivered directly to Cooper’s Salvage scrapyard 546 S. Railroad St. in Monticello to be weighed and counted toward the school’s account.
