The Delphi Police Department has announced that officers are creating trick-or-treat bags for families this year with stickers, safety materials and information regarding heroin and opioids to better educate the community on the substances.
Items Included:
- Reflective trick-or-treat bag to be used during trick-or-treating
- Non-toxic glow stick to be used for better visibility during trick-or-treating
- Pencil from Mental Health America
- Pencil reminding kids to “Call 911 in case of emergency”
- Star-shaped squeeze or stress reliever with positivity quotes
- Heroin and opioids information slide guide
- Partnership For A Drug Free Carroll County information
- Carroll-White Child Abuse Prevention Council information
- Project ChildSafe gun locks available upon request
- The locks will not be placed in every bag due to availability
The department stated that the included heroin and opioids information is based on the guide that states “what everyone should know,” which includes youth and families. The packet is intended to relay crucial information and resources to the families in the community, such as asking questions including:
- What are opioids?
- Why are opioids so addictive?
- What are symptoms of opioid abuse?
- What are signs of abuse?
- What are long-term effects of abuse?
- What should I do if a loved one is abusing opioids?
- How do I dispose of unused prescription opioids?
The department stated that the packet was paid for by the opioid settlement money and donations from partners in the community.
“We are also supporting local initiatives with this money such as the DAA Meeting that meets every Thursday night in Delphi,” the department released.
The bags will be available for the community during the Delphi Main Street Trunk or Treat event tomorrow, Oct. 26 at Riley Park.
