The public is invited to cut and remove designated downed trees at Shakamak State Park for personal firewood use.
Trees eligible for removal have fallen due to natural causes or were cut by park staff for safety reasons. These trees are located along roadways and in public-use areas, including picnic areas and the campground.
Firewood permit sales and cutting will begin Monday and continue through March 27, 2026.
The cost is $10 per pickup-truck load. A load is defined as a standard, unmodified pickup truck bed measuring up to 8 feet in length. Larger trucks or trailer loads will incur additional fees. All proceeds will support resource management and restoration efforts at the park, including tree replacement.
A firewood permit is required for each load and must be obtained at the Shakamak State Park office between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday. Permits are not sold on weekends or observed state holidays.
Wood cutting and removal are permitted between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
Firewood collected at Shakamak State Park is for personal use only and may not be sold.
