Free Falls Prevention Workshop Aims to Help Older Adults Stay Safe and Independent

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A community collaboration is helping older adults take proactive steps to prevent falls and maintain independence through an upcoming workshop.

“Stepping with Confidence,” a free falls prevention event, will take place Wednesday, April 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at West Lafayette City Hall in the Bean Room 128.

The workshop is hosted by Joyful Journey in partnership with the City of West Lafayette and American Senior Communities. Organizers say the event is designed to equip attendees with practical knowledge and confidence to reduce fall risks.

Falls remain a major concern for older adults, with one in four experiencing a fall each year. Local experts will be on hand to share strategies and answer questions.

Featured speakers include Shawn Hany, Eric Lamb of the West Lafayette Fire Department, Devon Moore, and Bess Witcosky.

Key topics attendees will learn include:

  • Common causes of falls
  • Practical steps to reduce fall risk
  • What to do after a fall
  • Proper body mechanics
  • Local resources for safety, recovery, and independence

The event is free and open to the public, with older adults, caregivers, and family members especially encouraged to attend.
