The Clinton County Commissioners are calling for the immediate resignation of Sheriff Richard Kelly and Jail Matron Ashley Kelly following the filing of new criminal charges against the couple. According to court documents, the charges include multiple felony counts of fraud, theft, and official misconduct. County officials say the allegations further reinforce concerns that have been ongoing for several years and continue to undermine public confidence in the Sheriff’s Office.
“For years, these issues have required significant time, attention, and taxpayer resources to address,” said Jordan Brewer, President of the Clinton County Commissioners. “These new charges make it clear that public trust has been broken. For the good of the Sheriff’s Office and the people of Clinton County, Sheriff Kelly and Matron Kelly should resign immediately.”
County leaders say the ongoing legal matters have placed a strain on county government and distracted from the work of serving residents and that it is time for the county to move forward and begin restoring trust in the Sheriff’s Office.
“This is not about politics. It is about accountability,” County Commissioner Kevin Myers added. “Our residents deserve leaders who uphold the law and safeguard taxpayer dollars. The only path forward is for both Richard and Ashley Kelly to step down.”
