Frankfort Updates Recycling Rules Under New Ordinance

At the most recent City Council meeting, an updated ordinance was approved regarding trash and recycling. We wanted to take a moment to explain what this means and how we can all work together to keep Frankfort clean.

The purpose behind these changes is simple: to help reduce the amount of trash and recycling blowing around our city. While we can’t control everyday littering, we can control how materials are put out for collection—and that’s where this effort is focused.

Recycling & Trash Guidelines:

• Recycling must be bagged or placed in a container
• Loose recycling is no longer permitted
• Cardboard should be broken down and secured if it will not fit in a bag
• Trash must continue to be bagged and placed inside your tote
• Recycling must now follow the same level of containment as trash
• No glass is permitted in curbside recycling
• Please make sure items are visible and not blocked by vehicles, trees, or other obstacles

Weather & Pickup Reminders:

• Wind can quickly scatter loose materials across streets and yards
• Take extra care to secure recycling on windy days
• Recycling is collected weekly on Wednesdays
• If your recycling is missed, call 765-659-2912 for assistance

Future Improvements:

• The city is actively looking at improving how recycling is collected in the future
• This includes exploring a side-load system with a dedicated recycling tote, separate from your trash tote—likely smaller and a different color
• Officials are currently reviewing costs and operations to determine what this would look like for the city
• The city is not providing recycling containers at this time

City officials say crews work hard every day to provide reliable service, but occasional misses can happen and are never intentional. Residents are encouraged to follow the updated ordinance to help keep Frankfort clean and looking its best.
