The Hendricks County Coroner has identified the two people who died following an officer-involved shooting and domestic disturbance investigation Sunday in Danville.
According to authorities, the deceased were identified as Brian Branagin, 51, and Laura Branagin, 52, who were married to one another.
The incident began around 1 p.m. on May 25, 2026, when the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a residence located at 671 Edgewood Drive.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with a man who repeatedly exited and reentered the home while carrying a rifle, according to investigators. Deputies requested additional assistance as the situation escalated.
Officers from the Hendricks County Joint Tactical Team, along with personnel from the Danville, Avon, Brownsburg and Plainfield police departments, responded to assist at the scene.
Authorities said officers repeatedly gave commands for the man to drop the rifle while attempting to communicate with him. During the confrontation, investigators said the man exited the residence and pointed the rifle toward law enforcement officers. Deputies and officers then fired their weapons, striking the man. First aid was immediately rendered.
Officers then entered the home in an attempt to locate the woman involved in the original domestic disturbance call. She was not found inside the residence. A search of the property later led investigators to locate the woman deceased in a grassy area south of the home near the back of the property.
Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.
No deputies or officers were injured during the incident.
The deputies and officers involved have been placed on administrative duty in accordance with departmental policy. At the request of the sheriff and chiefs of the responding agencies, the Indiana State Police is leading the investigation.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and no additional information is being released at this time. Once completed, the findings will be submitted to the Hendricks County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
