The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a Flash Flood Warning for portions of central and north-central Indiana early Friday morning as thunderstorms bring heavy rainfall to the region.
The warning is in effect until 8:30 a.m. EDT Friday and includes:
- Clinton County
- Northern Hamilton County
- Western Howard County
- Tipton County
- Southern Carroll County
According to the National Weather Service, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall across the warned area at approximately 2:37 a.m. EDT. Between 0.5 and 2.5 inches of rain had already fallen, with another 0.5 to 2.5 inches possible.
Officials warned that flash flooding is ongoing or could begin shortly, particularly in areas that have received repeated or heavy thunderstorms.
Areas at risk
Communities specifically listed in the warning include Frankfort, Kokomo, Tipton, Flora, Rossville, Mulberry, Russiaville, Kirklin, Atlanta, Sharpsville, Burlington, Michigantown, Kempton and Indian Heights.
The flooding threat includes small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses, low-lying locations and areas with poor drainage.
Residents in the warned area should avoid driving through flooded roadways. Even relatively shallow moving water can sweep vehicles off the road, and flooded road conditions can conceal dangerous damage or debris.
The warning covers portions of Carroll, Clinton, Hamilton, Howard and Tipton counties.
Residents should continue monitoring weather alerts and be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding threatens their location.
