FRANKFORT, Ind. — A wet, unsettled forecast moving through north-central Indiana Saturday has forced organizers to cancel, postpone, or adjust several events across the region, even as one community favorite is pushing ahead as planned.
Winding Creek Bluegrass Festival Cancelled for the Year
The Winding Creek Bluegrass Festival, held annually west of Kokomo in Russiaville, has been cancelled for this year. The festival — known for drawing bluegrass and folk acts, campers, and food and craft vendors to its grounds off County Road West 100 South — typically runs multiple days in mid-August, but persistent wet weather across the region this weekend made conditions unworkable for the outdoor stages, camping areas, and parking fields the event depends on.
Today’s Saturday forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with periods of light rain and highs near 78 degrees, with lingering shower chances into the evening — exactly the kind of muddy, unpredictable conditions that make large outdoor gatherings with camping and stage equipment especially risky. With grounds already saturated, organizers opted to scrap the rest of this year’s festival rather than risk washed-out sets and stranded campers.
Harness Racing for Today Cancelled.
The same weather system is also shifting the schedule at the Clinton County Fairgrounds, 1701 South Jackson Street in Frankfort, where Saturday’s harness racing card — part of the Indiana Sired Fair Circuit’s Grand Circuit stop — has had its start time changed to 1 p.m. Track officials note the new post time is subject to further change at the discretion of the track judge, so drivers, owners, and spectators heading to the fairgrounds should watch for any additional announcements before racing gets underway on the Doc McClain Memorial track.
Prairie Creek Park Concert Postponed
Frankfort’s Summer Concert Series has also felt the impact. Tonight’s scheduled show at the Farmers Bank Performance Center in Prairie Creek Park — featuring The Time Travelers and The Flying Toasters — has been postponed to a date yet to be determined. The free, family-friendly concert series had been set to resume Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. after a run of summer shows; organizers say they’ll announce a new date once one is locked in.
Hoppy Appreciation Day With Hot Dogs and Ice Cream Still a Go at Camp Cullom
Despite the shuffling elsewhere, Camp Cullom’s “Hoppy Appreciation Day” is still on as planned Saturday, running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Camp Cullom Lodge, 6815 West 200 North in Frankfort (Boone County Daily News). The free-will-offering event honors longtime camp ranger Hoppy Bray with a Hot Dog and Ice Cream social featuring several flavors from Glover’s Ice Cream, including the camp’s own custom flavor, Blueberry Wafflecone.
A ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. will mark the completion of a new pollinator garden north of the Nature Center, built by Girl Scout Troop 50435 as part of a Bronze Award project. The Frankfort Lions Club will run cornhole throughout the event.
Unfortunately, the Prairie Grass Observatory daytime solar viewing will be canceled due to the weather. Net proceeds from the day will be split 50/50 with United Way of Clinton County. The event is free and open to the public, with no registration required, and is being made possible with support from State Farm agent Guadalupe Bautista, the Frankfort Lions Club, and Kaspar Media Group.
With Camp Cullom’s five miles of shaded trails and covered lodge space, organizers say the event is well-equipped to weather a few passing showers — unlike the open-field festival grounds, outdoor concert stage, and racetrack schedules elsewhere in the county that have had to bend to today’s forecast. Families are encouraged to come out, grab a Hot Dog and a scoop of ice cream, and thank Bray for his years of service to the camp. A card for you to sign will be on hand at the lodge from 11 to 2 pm today.
