Gophers Blank Hot Dogs in Game of the Week

The Clinton Prairie Gophers defeated the Frankfort Hot Dogs 21-0 on Friday.

After a slow start from both offenses, Clinton Prairie pulled away in the second half.

“For our seniors, it was a great night,” Clinton Prairie head coach Kurt Schlicher said. “For the team overall, we’re very happy.”

The teams traded punts for the first few possessions, and the clock drained quickly as both teams emphasized the run.

With just under four minutes left, Gaige Kuzmicz connected with Karson Neal on a tip-drill catch to set the Gophers up inside the 10. Two plays later, Alex King took a toss 14 yards for the first score of the game.

Clinton Prairie got the ball out of halftime and established a dominant run game. Alex King did almost all of the damage on the 66-yard drive, which ended in a four-yard touchdown run for King.

King was named the First Bank Midwest Player of the Game for his performance.

“That’s two weeks in a row I think our kids have responded at halftime; one time we were behind, one time we were ahead,” Schlicher said. “But both times I liked the way we played in the third and fourth quarter the last two weeks.”

After a Frankfort punt, the Gophers drove into the red zone again, but Josiah Osoro picked off a pass by Kuzmicz to keep the game at 14-0.

Three plays later, Clinton Prairie’s Jackson Price intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for the touchdown.

Price’s pick was named the Encompass Federal Credit Union play of the game.

The Hot Dogs struggled to get any offense going the rest of the quarter, and Clinton Prairie held on for a 21-0 victory.

Frankfort fell to 0-2 with the loss and will start Monon Athletic Conference play when they travel to Greencastle on Friday.

Clinton Prairie starts 2-0 for the first time in three years and will host Clinton Central in the Corn Bowl on Friday on Hoosierland TV.
