Rossville Junior Emily Welborn’s scored the game-winning goal late in the second half to lift the Hornets over Twin Lakes.
Welborn redirected a corner kick from senior Victoria Vanderwall into the net as Rossville held off a determined Twin Lakes rally for a 4-3 girls soccer victory.
With temperatures nearing 90 degrees, officials called for several water breaks throughout the contest as players battled the heat. Due to low numbers, Rossville competed with just nine players, making the Hornets’ effort all the more impressive.
Rossville jumped out to an early 3-1 lead behind two goals from Vanderwall and one from Welborn. The Hornets appeared to have control, but Twin Lakes battled back in the second half, scoring twice to even the match at 3-3 late in regulation.
With the game hanging in the balance, Rossville earned a corner kick. Vanderwall’s service found Welborn, whose deflection slipped into the back of the net for the decisive goal.
Vanderwall finished with two goals and an assist on the game-winning corner, while Welborn added two goals, including the decisive tally. Despite playing with just nine players in oppressive conditions, Rossville displayed resilience by responding to Twin Lakes’ comeback with one final clutch play to earn the win.
The Hornets are now 2-1 on the season and will have some time to recover before taking on North Montgomery on Sep. 10.
