A Heat Advisory remains in effect across portions of central, south central, southeast, southwest and west central Indiana through 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, September 5, as hot temperatures and high humidity create potentially dangerous conditions.
The National Weather Service says heat index values could reach 104 degrees, with peak afternoon heat index readings near or above 105 degrees in some locations.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions during the hottest part of the day. Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, spending time in air-conditioned locations, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and checking on relatives and neighbors who may be vulnerable to the heat.
Storm Chances Saturday
While much of the day will be hot and mostly sunny, thunderstorms are possible, particularly during the afternoon.
The primary storm threats are isolated damaging wind gusts and lightning. Residents should remain alert to changing weather conditions and seek shelter indoors if thunderstorms develop nearby.
Saturday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high near 88 degrees, with an east wind of 6 to 8 mph becoming north-northwest during the afternoon. Tonight will be mostly clear, with temperatures falling to around 62 degrees.
Cooler Weather Arrives Sunday
A noticeable cooldown is expected Sunday, with sunny skies and a high near 79 degrees. Northeast winds of 7 to 9 mph will help bring more comfortable conditions to the region.
Sunday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 57 degrees.
The cooler weather will continue into Labor Day, when sunny skies and a high near 81 degrees are expected. Monday night will turn partly cloudy, with temperatures dropping to around 61 degrees.
More Storms Possible Midweek
The National Weather Service outlook indicates that additional chances for thunderstorms could return Wednesday into Thursday.
For now, the most significant concern remains Saturday’s heat and humidity. Residents spending time outdoors should limit strenuous activity during the afternoon, stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in cool or shaded areas.
