The Clinton Prairie School Board voted 3-1 Tuesday night not to renew the contract of Clinton Prairie Elementary School Assistant Principal Jonathan Shannon.
“I will tell you that we make our decisions based on the recommendations of the superintendent just as we do with any hire or non-renewal of contracts for staff that are either coming or leaving Clinton Prairie,” said Clinton Prairie School Board President Dr. Tim Snyder.
A crowd of approximately 100 individuals turned out for the board meeting and at least 15 individuals, including students, spoke in favor Shannon being retained. In fact, not one single negative word was spoken about Shannon. Also, more than 200 parents signed a petition to keep Shannon and more than 100 elementary students signed their own petition.
“We heard a lot of emotional comments,” said Snyder. “We have to take everything into account when we are making our decision. It is our responsibility to do what’s best for the school.”
Parents demanded to know the reason for the non-renewal. However, the board said it was private and personal. Those in attendance also vowed this fight is far from over.
This now puts the Clinton Prairie Elementary School having to hire two new administrators for next year as long-time Principal Joe Walker is retiring after the current school year after 20 years in that position.
“No one believes that it is the best situation,” said Snyder. “But we feel that moving forward we will pick two people to fill the positions that will be a good fit for our school and carry us forward into the future.”
Shannon issued the following prepared statement:
“I have been blessed to work alongside some of the most talented teachers and staff in the field of education here at Clinton Prairie Elementary School since my hiring in 2012. I have been thankful for the support from students, parents, community members, teachers and staff as we prepare our students to become well-rounded, contributing members of the community. Although disappointed with the decision, I am excited to finish the 2017-2018 school year strong and enjoy my time with the students, teachers and staff who embraced me since day one and continue to support our mission.”
