The post K-9 Athena Retirement Party Held Today At Frankfort Police Department first appeared on Clinton County Daily News.
]]>Today we gather to honor one of our dedicated members of the Frankfort Police Department—K9 Athena.
For the past five years, Athena has faithfully served this community alongside her handler, Lieutenant Chris Salaba. Together, they have formed a partnership built on trust, discipline, and unwavering commitment to keeping Frankfort and Clinton County safe.
Chief Scott Shoemaker stated “Many know that I am not a dog person, they scare me. Evan Hall and I drove to West Virigina to look at Athena and decide whether we brought her back. Obviously, we did. But when we stopped to let her use the restroom, Evan left me outside while he used the restroom. I was with her and I could not get her to get back in the kennel. She wouldn’t listen to me, fitting because none of my employees do. Thankfully there are dog people and Evan got her in the car. It takes a special person to handle a police K9. I want to acknowledge Lt. Salaba’s work over the years in keeping Athena healthy and strong. She was always ready to work.”
During her distinguished career, K9 Athena has been responsible for over 90 adult arrests related to illegal drugs. Each one of those arrests represents not just an enforcement action, but a life potentially changed, step toward a safer and healthier community. Her work has helped remove dangerous substances from our streets and has supported countless investigations that strengthened our department’s mission.
Beyond her remarkable record, Athena has been more than just a police K9. She has been a loyal partner, a trusted teammate, and a symbol of courage and service. Her presence on scene often brought calm, confidence, and assurance to officers and citizens alike.
As she begins her well-earned retirement, she’ll trade the long patrol shifts for a life of relaxation, love, and well-deserved rest. Lieutenant Salaba, thank you for your dedication and care in handling Athena through these years. The bond you two share is one that words can hardly describe—it’s built on loyalty, respect, and mutual trust.
On behalf of the Frankfort Police Department and the community we serve, we thank K9 Athena for her service, her courage, and her sacrifice. We wish her the happiest of retirements, filled with comfort, treats, and plenty of time to simply be a dog.
Thank you, Athena, for protecting and serving our city with honor.
