Clinton Prairie baseball defeats Rossville in top-ranked battle

The No. 4 Clinton Prairie Gophers defeated the No. 3 Rossville Hornets 8-2 on Saturday in a battle of top-ranked teams in 1A.

Clinton Prairie struck first, scoring four in the first and adding two more runs in the second to take an early 6-0 advantage.

The Gopher offense was hot all game. Nine players recorded a hit, seven had an RBI and four had multi-hit games.

Kye Jacobs reached base five times, including two hits and three walks. Jacobs was one of four players to score for the Gophers, touching home three times in the win. Luke Harshbarger, Wyatt Harshbarger and Elijah Anderson combined for the other 5 Clinton Prairie runs.

Zac Wainscott provided the offense for Rossville, collecting three hits, including a solo home run in the third.

The Gophers added to their lead in the fifth, scoring two more runs to lead 8-1.

Cayden Robinson started the game for Clinton Prairie and fired five innings, finishing with five strikeouts.

Alex King finished the final two innings, striking out four of the final six.

The Hornets added a run in the seventh on an RBI by Eli Barnes, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 8-2.

After going on an 8-1 stretch, Rossville has lost four of its last five. The loss marks the first in conference play, as the Hornets move to 5-1. Rossville is back in action against Western tonight at 5:30.

Clinton Prairie improved to 13-6 with a win and stays in the race for the Hoosier Heartland Conference title, moving to 4-1. The Gophers look to build off the win as they take on Lebanon tonight at 5:30.
