Five Vehicle Crash on Interstate 65 Kills One Sunday Night

At approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Whitestown Metropolitan Police Officers, Boone County Sheriff’s Deputies, and multiple Boone County Fire/EMS agencies were dispatched to a fully engulfed semi-tractor trailer fire near the 131.8-mile marker on I-65 southbound.

Responding agencies determined the fire was a result of a motor vehicle collision involving two semi-tractor trailers and three passenger vehicles. Law enforcement and Fire/EMS personnel arrived at the scene and immediately began treating all occupants. A preliminary investigation determined one semi tractor-trailer slowed, due to the ongoing construction projects on I-65, which resulted in another semi tractor-trailer colliding into the rear end of the trailer. The impact of the collision started the fire, which quickly spread, engulfing the semi tractor-trailer.

Five vehicles were involved in the accident. Two semi-tractor trailers collided with one another. The collision created a secondary accident involving three passenger vehicles. One individual was fatally injured. All other persons involved in the crash reported no injuries.

Due to the fatality, the Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash team is completing an investigation of the accident. Alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor at this time.

Due to the sensitive nature of this fatal crash and its ongoing investigation, the identity of the driver will be released once proper identification and notifications can be made.
