Frankfort Police Awarded Traffic Safety Grant

In support of efforts to combat impaired and dangerous drivers, Frankfort Police Department was awarded $16,581 from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).  The funds from this grant will pay for extra patrols and overtime costs associated with promoting traffic safety.

As a part of the Comprehensive Highway Injury Reduction Program (CHIRP), the ICJI and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have partnered with the Frankfort Police Department to conduct high visibility traffic enforcement.  Frankfort Officers will focus on impaired drivers, occupant protection requirements, and dangerous driving. Dangerous driving consists of texting and driving, speeding, stop sign violations, and driving left of center.

“The message to those who drink and drive or use drugs and drive is that they will go to jail,” stated Deputy Chief Scott Shoemaker. “The efforts of our officers will reduce the amount of serious crash-related injuries in Frankfort.  Our goal will be to keep alcohol-related fatalities to zero in our city.”

Impaired driving is three times more common at night than during the day. If you see an impaired driver, safely turn off the road away from the vehicle and then call 911. With all of today’s options for getting home safely, there’s no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired, as it endangers you and everyone else around you. Law enforcement recommends these safe alternatives to impaired driving:

  • Designate, or be, a sober driver.
  • Call a cab or a ridesharing service.
  • Celebrate at home or a place where you can stay until you are sober.
  • Throwing a party? Offer non-alcoholic beverages and plenty of food.
  • Friend or family member about to drive? Take the keys and make alternate arrangements.
