Head-On Crash on I-70 Claims One Life

At approximately 1 a.m. Sunday, emergency crews were called to the scene of a fiery crash on I-70 near Harding Street. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were first on scene and found a fully engulfed semi-tractor trailer off the road and a heavily damaged passenger vehicle, also on fire. The adult driver of the passenger vehicle, who was the sole occupant, was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the semi-tractor trailer was not injured.

Preliminary investigation at the scene has led investigators to believe the passenger vehicle was driving the wrong way on I-70 when it struck the semi head-on. The semi then went off the road, overturned and caught on fire.

This crash is still under investigation and troopers are still on scene. The eastbound lanes of I-70 are still closed and expected to remain closed for at least two more hours. The family of the deceased has been notified.
