Indiana State Police Investigating Inmate Death in Tipton

On Wednesday, Indiana State Police Detective Josh Maller, at the request of the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department, launched an investigation into the death of jail inmate Jerauld E Wallace III, 31, Tipton.

Last night at approximately 7:01 p.m., correctional officers found Wallace, alone in his jail cell, unconscious and not breathing. They attempted life-saving measures, but Wallace never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead at 7:41 p.m. Preliminary evidence indicates Wallace committed suicide by hanging himself.

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.

On July 14, 2021, Wallace was incarcerated in the Tipton County Jail on a Tipton Circuit Court arrest warrant alleging charges of burglary and theft. He also faced an additional charge for resisting law enforcement.

This investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.
