The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) wants to remind Hoosiers of a key rule of the road that can cause plenty of frustration, particularly on interstate highways: Slower-moving vehicles keeping right in multi-lane traffic isn’t just a courtesy; it’s the law.
The Indiana Driver’s Manual states that, “On the highway, slower vehicles should use the right lane. Leave the left-hand lane for faster-moving or passing vehicles.”
Between end‑of‑summer road trips and the extra driving that occurs with increased back-to-school travel, August traditionally continues to see some of the highest vehicle miles traveled by drivers.
The BMV encourages all Hoosier drivers, no matter how long they have been licensed, to review and keep up to date on the rules of the road. The Indiana Driver’s Manual is an ideal resource for pointers on safe driving, including changing lanes and passing, traveling on interstate highways, following speed limits, and wearing a seatbelt.
All motorists should travel at the posted speed limit, unless road or vehicle conditions require slower travel. On the highway, slow vehicles must travel in the right lane(s), leaving the left lane open for faster vehicles and safe passing.
