Kokomo Man Killed In Crash Sparks Shooting Investigation

The Kokomo Police Department released information regarding a vehicle accident Sunday afternoon that may have resulted from the driver sustaining a gunshot wound prior to the crash.

On Sunday, May 5 just after 3 p.m., officers with the Kokomo Police Department reportedly responded to the area of Ohio Street and Richmond Street in Kokomo to investigate a vehicle accident where a red Pontiac Vibe was pinned underneath a parked semi-trailer. Upon arrival the officers located several individuals outside of the vehicle who had managed to exit the vehicle after the collision, and officers were informed that the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and had suffered a gunshot wound, authorities say.

The Kokomo Fire Department was reportedly contacted to respond to the scene and assist in the extrication of the driver from the vehicle, and the driver was later identified as Marshon Burch, 21, of Kokomo. After extricating Burch from the vehicle, officers on the scene determined that he may have sustained a gunshot wound prior to the collision, and he was transported to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo where he succumbed to his injuries, authorities report.

The Howard County Coroner’s Office assisted in the investigation, and an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday at the Coroner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death. Authorities reported that the other two occupants in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and were uncooperative with the investigation.
