Patriot Grave Marking At Bunnell Cemetery Took Place Sunday

Clinton County Patriot William Carter was honored Sunday with a grave marking ceremony in Bunnell Cemetery.

Captain Harmon Aughe Chapter, NSDAR held the ceremony in conjunction with the William Henry Harrison SAR Chapter from Tippecanoe County.

Patriot Biography

William Richard Carter was born on Sunday May 22,1748 in Chester County,Pennsylvania. He served in the Revolutionary war as a Private under Captain John Raison and Colonel Thomas Hawkley in Pennsylvania. He enrolled again as a Teamster from Pennsylvania under Wagonmaster Owen Thomas.

Carter applied for a pension in May 1834 in Clinton County,Indiana where he was considered a pioneer of the county. He testified that at some point after the war he moved to Loudon County, Virginia and remained there 30-40 years before moving to Ohio and then to Indiana. He married Julia Jury Carter, While in Virginia their son, Jesse Carter was born in 1783 and is also burried at Bunnell Cemetery.

William Carter died here in Clinton County, Indiana on Monday, September 21, 1840 at the age of 92 years, 3 months, and 30 days.
