The Boone County Solid Waste Management District has announced its upcoming 13th Annual Reuse Heart and Sole Shoe Collection where community members may donate their shoes for reuse.<\/p>\n

The district has hosted the collection for the last 12 years during the month of February to keep shoes out of the landfill and help those in need. Depending on the materials utilized in shoes, they may take hundreds of years to decompose, such as leather shoes taking 50 to 100 years, rubber soles taking 80 years and synthetics taking over 100 years.<\/p>\n

Since 2012, the district has utilized its collection spots to collect and donate over 70,000 pairs of shoes donated by residents and local businesses and organizations.<\/p>\n

Organizations interested in hosting a collection bin may email Jennifer Lawrence at jlawrence@co.boone.in.us by this Friday, Jan. 24.<\/p>\n

The shoe collection will occur from Feb. 3 through Feb. 18.<\/p>\n
