Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets and the YWCA of Greater Lafayette are partnering together to proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month with a proclamation ceremony on Friday, April 4.

Sheets will read the proclamation on Friday, April 4 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Hope Center at 806 N. Columbia St. in Frankfort.

The YWCA released information regarding Sexual Assault Awareness Month courtesy of Jen Bushore, Outreach & Development Coordinator:

Every 68 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted, and countless cases go unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of resources. April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time dedicated to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and fostering action to prevent sexual violence.

This year, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center has announced the theme: “Together We Act, United We Change.” This theme underscores the power of collective action in preventing sexual violence and supporting survivors on their journey to healing.

Sexual violence is a pervasive issue that affects individuals of all ages, races, sexual orientations, gender identities, socio-economic levels, abilities, religions, backgrounds, citizenship statuses, and beliefs. Statistics show that 81% of women and 43% of men have reported experiencing some type of sexual violence in their lifetime. Furthermore, 84.8% of sexual violence cases are perpetrated by someone known to the victim—an acquaintance, family member, or intimate partner—rather than a stranger.

The impact of sexual violence is profound, leaving lasting effects on survivors’ health, well-being, and opportunities. Many struggle with physical and mental health challenges, economic instability, and trauma that hinders their ability to reach their full potential.

Addressing and preventing sexual violence requires a sustained commitment to supporting survivors, educating communities, tackling root causes, fostering meaningful conversations, strengthening coordinated community efforts, and holding perpetrators accountable.

During Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we recognize and honor the tireless work of advocates, victim service providers, law enforcement officers, forensic nurses, and prosecutors who provide safety, advocacy, resources, and healing for survivors. Together, we can create a world free from sexual violence, where every individual has the right to live in safety and dignity.
