One of the presentations at the IU Health and Safety Fair Saturday at the Clinton County Fairgrounds was the “Stop the Bleed” presentation done by IU Health Trauma Registrar and Outreach Coordinator Teresa Williams.
Williams said approximately 150 such presentations has been done since last May and they are coming back to Clinton County very soon.
“We are coming back to the Clinton County community,” said Williams. “We have been in the Frankfort school system and the Clinton Central school system. We have had some outreach programs also at IU Health Frankfort Hospital. We look to come back and offer some more community ‘Stop the Bleed’ presentations in the future.”
Williams said one of the reasons these types of presentations were done was in response to mass shootings in all types of venues all across the country. However, this is not just for that type of situation.
“A lot of people are fearful that ‘Stop the Bleed’ is all about mass shootings and evil type things,” said Williams. “But basically we find they use this technique and training in their day-to-day lives.”
Williams said this would be especially beneficial for people such as farmers, who are now back in the field. She added this can be used for any kind of farm accident, car accident that you come upon, lawn mowers, chain saws and other types of power tools. Williams also said they go to manufacturing companies to teach ‘Stop the Bleed.’
“It (Stop the Bleed) is used in your everyday life,” said Williams. “It’s something you’re going to use at home and it could be your loved one. A person can bleed to death in 5 to 15 minutes. We want all the civilian people to know how to stop that bleeding so that we get them to a trauma center, get them fixed up and back home.”
The IU Health and Safety Fair had over 40 health and wellness organizations participating with attendees receiving free health screenings, tasting different healthy smoothies, learning hands-only CPR as well as learning about financial health and health savings accounts. There will also tours available of the Lifeline helicopter, ambulances and other fun vehicles.
