In 1968 the Theatre at Frankfort High School had a very busy back door entrance. Actors and Actresses, the Director and his support team for sound and lights, tickets, set builders and strike crew would park thier ‘50s and 60’s model cars just east of the auditorium back entrance. Summer heat was no friend and evening practices on The Hasty Hart, Night Must Fall, Dark at the Top of the Stairs and Come Blow Your Horn could be long.
But letters were written about how good the performances were. Word of mouth spread about this theatre and its demanding Director, Martin Henderson and his wife and business manager, Carol.
That was 50 years ago.
On June 1 at Arborwood the community celebrates the Red Barn Summer Theatre Gala as the Red Barn takes a bow for its 50th year of community presence. 1972 was dark when the Hendersons took thier family to Maine for the summer and perhaps began the dreaming, planning process of moving to the Barn. 50 years ago it all started with actors performing and audience sitting ON STAGE. Sold out crowds were not unusual because the stage would only hold so many seats. Maybe the name On-Stage Foundation the Red Barn operates under to this day has a double meaning with roots back to its Genisis before the days of the Beautiful Red Barn.
The Red Barn became part of Clinton County’s Summer Theatre experience in 1973.
