Camp Cullom Academy of Science for 5th Graders Held Today

Selected 5th graders from all over Clinton County gathered at Camp Cullom Saturday for an all-expense paid day of discovery.  Talented 5th graders with a knack for Science gathered at the Camp Cullom Nature Center filled with hands-on projects.

George Wyncott explains the theory of propulsion with a balloon before each student had the opportunity to launch (and keep) thier own rocket.

—The Weather and Climate Project by Steve Smith, EAPS, Purdue University (Earth, Atmosphere and Planetary Science)

—Rockets and the Theory of Flight (each student finished building and launching his or her own Rocket) George Wyncott, Andy Schilling and Lisa Wieland: Wabash Valley Astronomical Society

—-The Scientific Method used by All Scientists – Russ Kaspar

—-Study of the Prairie Grass, Aquatic and Woodland habitats. Robert Suseland, Wildlife Biologist, Jay Beugly, Fisheries Biologist and Jeff Swackhamer, Forester.

—-Dissection Lab and lecture on Crayfish by Fort Wayne Science Central

—-Solar Viewing and Observatory Lecture as possible by Russ Kaspar and Andy Schilling

—-Dog Training Demonstration by Jeff Swackhamer.

The popular Camp Cullom Academy of Science is an opportunity each year to turn Camp Cullom into a giant Science Laboratory to foster an appreciation for Science while kindling a spirit of discovery in the minds of gifted area 5th graders.

The Camp Cullom Academy of Science was under the Direction of Leah Harden assisted by Camp Cullom Board Members.

Student selection is based on Clinton Country teacher nominations. A limited number of seats are also available on an application basis open to all 5th grade students including home school, Lafayette, Kokomo and Regional area 5th grade students.  Questions on the Academy of Science?
