It’s not that the Clinton Central class of 1968 has gotten together every year to reminisce and catch up with one another since their graduation fifty-three years ago, but they have done a pretty good job of it nonetheless. CCHS’68 alum, Larry Helmberger and his wife Cherie, hosted this year’s get together on Saturday at their lovely lakeside house on the northern end of Lake Shafer.
Thirteen graduates, along with seven spouses, were able to attend. With the Helmbergers’ house situated on a bluff overlooking the lake, attendees were treated to a panoramic view of the busy lake while they enjoyed a delicious pot luck dinner outdoors. The hosts made sure there was plenty of shade by way of tall trees and canvas awnings, and a bit of breeze helped keep the group comfortable on a typically warm summer afternoon.
Cherie Helmberger pulled extra duty in offering to take her guests out for a pontoon boat ride before our meal – Eight folks took her up on the offer and had a great time getting a tour of nearly the entire lake. Along the way, Cherie pointed out popular spots and the homes of acquaintances. As readers might imagine, Indiana State Beach and other popular lake venues were well attended as families got in one last weekend before the start of school.
Though several graduates had to send regrets, either because of distance or schedule conflicts, those who could attend felt fortunate to spend time with the ‘kids’ they had gone to school and grown up with. Memories were shared of time in school together, along with catching up on more recent activities. The members of this class have shared a strong bond over the years and gatherings like this help keep that feeling going – For all, it was a great opportunity to pick up with where we had left off from the last time we got together. Forever friends are the best of all.
