Rossville Schools Leads The Way In Sudden Cardiac Arrest Preparedness

Rossville Consolidated School District announced its commitment to the safety of students, staff, and visitors by equipping its schools with 22 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and ensuring over 80% of staff are trained in CPR/AED use. This translates to a remarkable AED-to-student ratio of one device per 42 students, a level of preparedness many schools do not currently achieve.

Indiana does not require AEDs in schools or athletic fields. While lawmakers considered mandating AEDs in 2023, the proposal was ultimately not passed, leaving schools to voluntarily decide their level of preparedness. Despite this, Rossville Schools is leading by example, prioritizing safety through proactive investment in AEDs and comprehensive staff training.

“We believe every second counts in an emergency,” said Chief Tommy Dillingham of RCSD’s Police Department.

Kayla Horoho, the school nurse, said, “By equipping our schools with AEDs and training our staff, we ensure that we are prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to sudden cardiac arrest, potentially saving lives.”

Rossville Schools has exceeded the three-minute response goal recommended by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, which states that readily available AED can significantly improve survival chances. Despite the state’s incomplete data on AED availability in schools, Rossville has implemented site-specific emergency action plans and developed an emergency response team to ensure everyone knows how to act quickly in an emergency.

“While Indiana’s laws may not require AEDs, we go above and beyond to protect our students and staff. We want parents to feel confident that Rossville Schools is prepared to handle any situation that may arise,” added Dr. Jim Hanna, RCSD Superintendent.

Registered Nurse and school board member Julia Mink recently expressed her appreciation to me after the Oct. 1, Board of Education Meeting. Mrs. Mink said, “I am extremely grateful for Rossville Schools’ daily efforts to care for our students. After seeing an Indianapolis TV station air a report on schools noting the value of AEDs and knowing firsthand that they can save lives, I appreciate Rossville schools’ efforts.”
