Samuel Gene “Sonny” Barker, 86, of Frankfort, passed away September 17, 2025 at his home. He was born May 15, 1939 in Frankfort to Samuel Ozias Barker and Virginia Mae (Amich) Crabtree. He married Dawn Renee Griffis on March 25, 1997 and she survives.
Sam was a 1958 graduate of Frankfort High School. He proudly served his county in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958-1961, during the Vietnam war. He worked as a bricklayer/contractor his whole life, was a Ferrier for 30 years, was a commercial helicopter pilot, worked at the Frankfort airport, was an EMT and at the age of 65, attained his Real Estate license. In his spare time, he was a leather smith owning, Tumbleweed Leather.
Sam is survived by his wife, Dawn of Frankfort, children, Jeffery Joseph Barker of Southern CA, Alicia “Lisa” Denise (Eric) Lynn of Brownsburg, Erik Jason Barker of CA, step-brothers, Larry (Julia) Crabtree of Frankfort, Steve (Connie) Crabtree of Wabash, Jerry (Sharon) Crabtree of TN, Eddie (Becky) Crabtree of Frankfort, grandchildren, Timothy Barker and Austen Arnold, along with his best friends, Joe Gregor and John Phipps.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Christiana Lynn Meyer on October 6, 2024, sisters, Virginia Creasy, Sandra Evans, brother Virgil Joe Barker and step-brother, David Crabtree.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S. Main St., Frankfort. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 25th at Kilmore Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association; envelopes will be available.
