Rossville 5th Grade Students Experience an Inspiring Day at Purdue University

Just a short drive from their classrooms, 88 fifth-grade students from Rossville Elementary recently experienced a day of discovery at one of Indiana’s most recognized institutions, Purdue University in nearby West Lafayette.

The field trip offered Rossville students a firsthand look at college life, athletics, and aviation by visiting two iconic Purdue destinations: Mackey Arena and the Purdue University Airport.

The day began with a behind-the-scenes tour of Mackey Arena, widely regarded as one of the premier venues in college basketball and home to the Purdue Boilermakers men’s and women’s basketball programs. Students learned about the arena’s storied tradition, championship moments, and the culture that has helped make Purdue basketball a nationally respected program.

Adding to the excitement, the students caught a glimpse of Oscar Cluff, a member of the Boilermakers basketball team. The unexpected sighting quickly became a highlight of the visit, sparking excitement among the young visitors.

After leaving Mackey Arena, the students traveled to Purdue University Airport, one of the few university-owned airports in the country and a central hub for Purdue’s highly respected aviation and aeronautics programs. During the visit, students explored aircraft up close, examined aviation models, and learned how drones are used in research, transportation, and emerging technologies.

The experience gave students a chance to see how the subjects they study in school, such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, can connect them to real-world careers and innovation. Purdue’s aviation and engineering programs are among the most recognized in the nation, giving students a glimpse of potential future pathways in higher education.

For many of the Rossville students, the most meaningful realization was how close such opportunities are to their community. Located less than 30 minutes from Rossville, Purdue University serves as a regional hub for research, education, and innovation in Indiana.

Mrs. Buck, a fifth-grade teacher at Rossville Elementary, said the trip helped students see how their classroom learning connects to the real world.

“This experience allows our students to see possibilities beyond the classroom,” Buck said. “Whether it’s athletics, engineering, aviation, or technology, visiting Purdue helps them realize that exciting opportunities exist right here in our own community.”

By the end of the day, the fifth graders returned home with new knowledge, plenty of stories to share, and perhaps a few early dreams of becoming future Boilermakers.

Rossville Elementary extended its appreciation to Purdue staff and tour guides who helped make the visit engaging, informative, and memorable for the students.
