Harold “Sonny” Oberle, 83, of Mulberry, passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, likely already telling jokes to those he has reunited with after being apart.
Born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana, Sonny graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1961. Shortly after graduation, he spent time singing in a gospel band, an early glimpse into his lifelong love of music. He entered the workforce as a mechanic for Ford, and with Lafayette Overhead Door before later retiring from the State Farm Regional Office in West Lafayette after 26 years of service.
Retirement suited Sonny well. He spent his time running live sound for various local bands, partnering with a friend in speaker repair, serving as part of the Clinton County EMA team, and taking the occasional Goldwing ride into town. Sonny had a knack for fixing just about anything, and if the proper tool didn’t exist, he made one, and then a few more for his family and friends. Sonny never seemed to meet a conversation he couldn’t turn into a story or a stranger he couldn’t make laugh.
Sonny was welcomed in heaven by his parents, Harold F. and Helen Oberle.
Waiting here until we meet again are his sister, Helene (Larry) Shields; his children, Leslie (Jeanette) Oberle, Michael (Martha) Oberle, Shanna (Alejandro Oviedo) Oberle; and his bonus son, Jeff Golden. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Kristen, Brandi, Morgan, Kollin, Jasmine, Chloe, and Diego; along with great-grandchildren Wyatt, Willow, Julian, James, and David.
Sonny was married twice, first to Glenda (Koble) Oberle (deceased), mother of Leslie and Michael, then to Tammy (Staley) Moss, mother of Shanna.
