Rossville Consolidated School District has expanded its breakfast program to offer students grab-and-go meals on two-hour delay days, helping ensure a morning schedule change doesn’t keep students from getting breakfast.

The program provides a convenient breakfast option as students arrive for a shortened school day. By adapting meal service to delayed starts, Rossville supports students’ nutritional needs and helps them prepare for classroom learning.

Breakfast reports from Laura Wilson, cafeteria manager, show the program’s reach. On October 6, a regular school day, Rossville served 83 student breakfasts, including 42 at elementary school and 41 at middle/high school. On October 7, during the two-hour delay, the district served 48 student breakfasts, including 21 at the elementary school and 27 at the middle and high school.

Although participation was lower during the delay, the grab-and-go option served nearly 58 percent of the number served the previous day. These figures represent two individual days rather than a daily average, but they demonstrate continued demand for breakfast when the school schedule changes.

Breakfast offers benefits beyond satisfying hunger. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance and test scores. School meal programs also support better overall diet quality by providing nutritious foods that contribute to healthy growth and development.

CDC guidance also associates a healthy breakfast with improved cognitive function, particularly memory, along with improved mood and reduced absenteeism. Maintaining breakfast access during a delay helps support students’ readiness to learn.

Rossville’s expanded service reflects the district’s commitment to meeting students’ needs, even when their morning routines are disrupted. With grab-and-go breakfast, students can start a delayed school day with an important meal.
