Annual Sugar Creek District Pinewood Derby

Story contributor Kyle Shaffer.

On Saturday, the Cub Scouts of Pack 338 hosted the annual Sugar Creek District Pinewood Derby at St Matthew United Methodist Church. 35 homemade cars raced down the aluminum track in hopes of netting the lucky owner a trophy. Scouts were assigned to a class according to their den membership. Family members were also able to participate with the “tagalong” class for brothers or sisters and a class for the adults as well.

The event began with registration opening up early in the morning with the addition of a pancake and sausage breakfast available to racers and their families. With their eyes glued to the finish line, cheers and shouts of joy could be heard coming from track side as scouts were lined up in hopes of their car finishing first. Once the main heats were finished, a short break was taken to enjoy hot dogs and chips for lunch. After lunch, it was time for the finals to get underway.

Many trophies were awarded for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for each class. Next up is the state Pinewood Derby at the Indiana State Museum on April 11.
