Back Portion of House Destroyed by Fire

The fire at 1355 W. Barner St. was on the back portion of the residence.

A structure fire at a residential house destroyed the back portion and the garage at 1355 W. Barner St. early Saturday afternoon.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, which started around noon. There were two animals in the house — a dog, who was rescued by a neighbor, and a guinea pig that brought out in his cage by firefighters.

Captain Josh Uitts of the Frankfort Fire Department said his crew did an excellent job of not allowing the fire to get in the front part of the house nearest Barner as thick smoke filled the air which made the fire more difficult to fight.

No one was injured in the fire. One firefighter suffered a burn to the lower part of his leg.

Frankfort Firefighters rescue a guinea pig from a house fire at 1355 W. Barner St. Saturday.

The cause of the fire, which is believed to have started in the garage, is still under investigation.

Barner was closed between Central and Magnolia Avenue because of the fire.
