Bill to Extend In-State Tuition Rates to Vets Passes House

BRIAN BUCHANAN

A bill authored by State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon) that would extend in-state tuition rates to veterans who live in states bordering Indiana unanimously passed theHouse Committee on Education Wednesday.

Senate Bill 93 would allow veterans of the U.S. Military and the Indiana National Guard who are residents of Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky or Ohio to be eligible for in-state tuition rates at Indiana colleges and universities. The individual applying for in-state tuition under this legislation would have to apply to an Indiana institution within three years of the veteran’s discharge.

“Our veterans have sacrificed a great deal to protect our nation,” Buchanan said. “This bill is one way we can say thank you to the men and women who have put their lives on the line for our country.”

SB 93 will now move to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
