On Tuesday, March 4, the Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home will formally launch the Independence Project, IP, with special guest Bishop Tracy Malone of the Indiana Episcopal Area of the United Methodist Church, who will bless and dedicate the two new IP transitional housing buildings.
The IP is designed for young adults who have aged out of the Children’s Home program who need extra help to get on their feet and second changes when they stumble, and the program is seeing success even in its pilot phase. The project can accommodate six participating young adults in two facilities, including a small home donated by Witham Health Services and a small apartment building.
The IP will provide:
- Safe, Affordable Housing, supportive housing options for six former foster or probation youth
- a range of Support Services, including case management, life-skills training, mental-health counseling, educational and vocational support, and parenting classes.
- Budget and Money Management practice and opportunities to learn budgeting
- Peer Support and Engagement and community events to build a sense of belonging and connection among participants.
- Community Partnerships with local agencies, churches, schools, employers, and community organizations
- Continuous Improvement and Sharing
