BMV Announces Disability Blackout Plate

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is pleased to announce that the BMV’s popular Blackout plate design will soon be available for standard disability plates beginning February 13.

“Hoosiers have made it clear they love the blackout license plate, with sales now topping 100,000 and generating meaningful revenue for the state,” said Keri Washabaugh, Deputy Commissioner of Vehicle and Credential Policy. “This plate gives drivers a sleek, personalized option while supporting important public services provided by the BMV. Because the demand has been so strong, we’re expanding access to ensure every Hoosier can take part, including offering a new blackout plate for people with disabilities that features the International Symbol of Access.”
Just like the standard version of the Blackout plate, the disability plate features an all-black background with crisp white lettering in addition to the International Symbol of Access (ISA). The Disability Blackout plate will be available for passenger motor vehicles, trucks (11,000 lbs. or less), motorcycles, or RVs for eligible customers.
In just six months, over 105,000 Hoosiers have chosen the Blackout plate for their vehicles making it one of the most popular alternative plate designs on the road.

Anyone needing to apply to be eligible for a disability plate can complete an Application for Disability License Plate or Parking Placard by submitting it to a local BMV branch or mailing the application to the address listed on the form. A checklist to guide customers through the application is available here on the BMV’s website.

Eligible Hoosiers whose registration is up for renewal will be able to purchase the Disability Blackout plate for an additional $45 by visiting a BMV branch. If any eligible Hoosier, would like to replace their current disability plate to the Blackout version before its expiration, a $9.50 replacement fee will be applied on top of the $45 fee for the plate. The Disability Blackout plate will also be available to be personalized for another $45 fee.
