Special Olympics Indiana’s 44th annual Winter Games will be held beginning this weekend from Jan. 12 through Jan. 14 at Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg as hundreds of athletes from across the state will take part in three sports, including athletes from Boone County.
An opening ceremony will commence on Sunday, Jan. 12 with state championships for alpine skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing kicking off Jan. 13 and Jan. 14. Special Olympics Indiana President and CEO Jeff Mohler discussed the importance of the winter games.
“The Winter Games are a unique experience for our athletes, and these three days renew Special Olympics Indiana’s commitment to offer sports training and competition opportunities year-round,” Mohler said.
The weekend also includes an Opening Ceremony and Winter Fest celebration at nearby Higher Ground Conference and Retreat Center, where athletes and their families can participate in games, activities and more between events.
The competition schedule includes:
Sunday, Jan. 12
- Opening Ceremonies: 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 13
- Practice: 9 a.m. to noon
- Competition: 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 14
- Competition: 10 a.m. to noon
- Awards: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
There is no charge for spectators.
