Boone County Doubling Down on Quality of Place Focus

After a big year in 2017, economic development leaders in Boone County say a key to maintaining momentum will be a focus on making the county an attractive place to live, work and play. Boone County EDC Executive Director Molly Whitehead says 14 companies committed to invest nearly $200 million in expansion projects in 2017, with job commitments totaling nearly 1,800. The county has already announced three corporate expansions in 2018, with more in the pipeline.

In an interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Whitehead talked about a priority that she says is critical for continued growth.

Whitehead says the county’s location is a natural advantage, especially when it comes to workforce. “We have access to Lafayette AND Indianapolis both,” said Whitehead. “So people can really drive and work within a reasonable distance.”

But Whitehead says continued focus on building and enhancing community amenities will be essential to keep the momentum. “Because we know that that ultimately will drive the people in those companies that may want to choose to locate here.”

Boone County’s economic development roll is continuing in 2018. Earlier this month, Merrillville-based MonoSol LLC chose Lebanon over sites in several states for a $70 million facility that is expected to employ nearly 90 workers. MonoSol makes water-soluble films used in products like laundry and dishwasher detergent pods.

Last week, Lebanon-based IBC Coatings Technologies Inc. announced plans to grow its Boone County operations with a new production line, a nearly $5 million investment expected to create up to 14 jobs.
