Boone County lawmakers encourage local college students and recent graduates to apply online for an internship at the Indiana Statehouse before the Oct. 31 deadline.
State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) said the House of Representatives offers paid spring internships to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Interns will receive $900 biweekly while working at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis during the 2024 legislative session, which begins in January and concludes mid-March.
“Interning at the Statehouse during the fast-paced session is very exciting, and I hope college students from our area are able to participate,” Thompson said. “Now is the time to get those applications submitted online so that you, too, can benefit from such a rewarding learning experience.”
State Rep. Becky Cash (R-Zionsville) said interested Hoosiers should visitindianahouserepublicans.com/internship and complete the application before Oct. 31.
“As an intern, you will build skills in time management, communication and writing that will help prepare you for any future career,” Cash said. “This is a great opportunity to serve Hoosiers while taking on more responsibility as a young adult, and I hope to see students from our communities apply before the deadline.”
According to State Rep. Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel), positions are available in legislative operations where interns work directly with constituents and help track committee activity. The communications department is looking for interns to help write press releases and email newsletters, and work with social media, graphic design and audio/video production. The policy department is also in need of interns to help research, track and analyze legislation.
“The skills our interns gain while working at the Statehouse are valued in the job market, and we really count on them to assist staff and members with important tasks,” Schaibley said. “Whether it’s working with constituents, helping draft a press release or providing research on legislation, there’s a position for anyone who’s interested.”
State Rep. Mark Genda (R-Frankfort) said internships are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student’s college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
“Interns are able to learn, gain professional experience, and network with state and local leaders, which can lead to opportunities in a number of different career paths,” Genda said. “I encourage any interested student or recent graduate to apply now.”
