Buchanan: Bill to Help Active Military Families Passes the Senate

BRIAN BUCHANAN

bill authored by State Sen. Brian Buchanan (R-Lebanon) that would streamline the occupational license process for military spouses passed the Senate last week by a vote of 47 to 2.

Senate Bill 427 would permit a military spouse who holds a valid occupational license in another state, to be issued a provisional license for their regulated occupation.

“The U.S. Department of Defense is encouraging states to adopt this language to help military families who frequently have to move,” Buchanan said. “This legislation would allow the spouse of a military member who is licensed in a different state to easily continue their career in Indiana without causing undue hardship on their family.”

Arizona is the only other state to have adopted this language, making Indiana a national leader if SB 427 is passed.

SB 427 will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
