Carol Diane Metzger, 74, of rural Mulberry, passed away on March 1, 2023, at Wellbrooke of Kokomo.
Born April 23, 1948, in Monett, Missouri, Carol was the daughter of Leonard C. and Maxine R. (Huffmaster) Montgomery. She grew up in the Fairview, Missouri, area and was a 1966 graduate of Triway (Missouri) High School. She attended Crowder Junior College in Neosho, Missouri, and received her Associate of Arts degree in 1968. In 1970, she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri. She later earned her Masters Degree in Education from Indiana University Kokomo.
After moving to Frankfort, Indiana, in August 1971, Carol met Ned Metzger, and they married August 10, 1974, in Fairview, Missouri. They moved to the Mulberry area in 1976.
Carol began her teaching career by teaching 5th grade in Pierce City, Missouri from 1969 to 1971. After moving to Frankfort, she was hired by Clinton Prairie Schools, where she taught for 36 years. Her first 14 years were in 4th grade at Jefferson Elementary before moving to Clinton Prairie Elementary, where she taught 7 years in 4th grade and 15 years in 5th grade. She retired from teaching in May 2007.
A former member of Rossville United Methodist Church, Carol served as their pianist for many years. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Lafayette. She enjoyed attending Bible Study Fellowship where she was a group leader, driving the combine during corn harvest, working crossword puzzles, reading, camping, and was a Chicago Cubs and Purdue Boilermaker fan.
Surviving Carol is Ned, her loving husband of 48 years; her mother, Maxine Montgomery; a brother, Glenn (Deborah) Montgomery; a sister-in-law, Janet (Ron) Burkhalter; three nephews, Justin (Jennifer) Montgomery, Jason Montgomery, and Brad (Melissa) Burkhalter; and one niece, Reneé (Bart) Miller.
She was preceded in death by her father, Leonard Montgomery and grandparents, Oscar & Elizabeth Montgomery and James & Zenver Huffmaster.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 2pm to 5pm at Day & Genda Funeral Home~Bodine Chapel in Rossville. A funeral service will be Monday, March 6, 2023, at 11am also at the funeral home, with Pastor Mike Vauters officiating. The services will be live streamed at www.dayandgenda.com.
