Carrol Joy (Crum) Avery Smith

Carrol Joy (Crum) Avery Smith, 87, a lifelong Clinton County resident, died December 16, 2018 in Muncie, Indiana. She was born on March 29, 1931 in Michigantown to Jacob M. & Audra (Scott) Crum. She graduated from Michigantown High School in 1949. She married Karl Robert “Bob” Avery on November 13, 1949, and he preceded her in death on June 11, 1968. She later married Robert “Bob” Max Smith on August 2, 1974, and he preceded her in death on February 26, 2005. Older siblings, Esther Ault, Devon Crum, and Marie Berry, also preceded her in death.

Surviving her are 2 daughters, Janis K. Avery Mundell and Julie M. Avery both of Muncie, Indiana; her brother, Roy M. Crum of Michigantown; 3 grandchildren: Brandon Mundell (Lisa Cox) of Muncie, Kyle Mundell of Muncie, and Brett (Jennifer) Mundell of Indianapolis and their daughters/great-grandchildren, Emily Clark Mundell and Sussan Carrol Mundell. Among many relatives, we would like to mention her first cousin and best friend, who preceded her in death, Dorene Crum Pritts Walls.

In her lifetime, Carrol was the bookkeeping extraordinaire, supporting both husbands’ businesses: the original South Pole Sunday Castle (later sold and renamed The Golden Dipper), Fairground Motors (Bob Avery) and Smith Farms (Bob Smith, Scircleville). She was also the bookkeeper for the Johnson Township Trustee and The Scircleville United Methodist Church, which she served until her move to Muncie to live near her family there. Carrol enjoyed her church and community, her bridge ladies, and living in the country. After her move to Muncie, she enjoyed being closer to and spending time with her family, especially her young great-granddaughters, watching birds and especially the hummingbirds in the garden outside her front window.
