Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Utilizes Drone To Locate Single-Vehicle Crash Suspect

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with multiple local agencies, located a man who fled the scene of a single-vehicle crash utilizing new equipment recently donated to the department.

On Dec. 21 in the evening hours, Carroll County E911 reportedly received a call in reference to a vehicle that was located down in the ditch on State Road 25 northbound, just south of the County Road 200 North overpass.

Three deputies reportedly responded to the area and found that the vehicle was unoccupied, and it appeared that the vehicle had left the roadway, striking a speed limit sign and guardrail before rolling down into the culvert.

Deputies conducted an immediate sweep of the area alongside members of the Delphi Fire Department and Delphi Police Department, and they determined that no one was in the immediate area. A detective, who also operates as a certified drone operator, was reportedly contacted to utilize a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera that was recently donated to the agency to sweep the extended area.

The drone was able to identify a person running through a field east of the location near County Road 625 West and was able to communicate with other deputies to locate the person.

Deputies, alongside Indiana DNR, were reportedly able to apprehend the male, who was identified as the driver of the crashed SUV.

The male was reportedly taken to a local hospital by Carroll County EMS to be evaluated before being transported back to the Carroll County Jail.

The man, whose name was not released to the public by the agency, was charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash and Operating a Motor Vehicle without ever Receiving a License.
