City Doing Informational Meetings on Annexation

The Frankfort City Council is in the process of doing a series of six public information meetings for the potential annexation of portions of Center Township and Washington Township which is being referred to as the State Road 28 West Annexation.

The second of those meetings were held Thursday morning at the Community Schools of Frankfort Administration Office. About 25 individuals attended, including some city and county officials.

“We expected this (the meetings) to be for information purposes not only to present information to the constituents but we also want to here comments and concerns from them (the public and officials) as well,” said Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets. “As was said, we haven’t taken any formal action yet on this annexation. Right now, we are collecting information ourselves as well as trying to explain to the public what is going to happen.”

Also present were officials from Barnes and Thornburg as well as Reedy Financial to explain as many of the ramifications as possible.

“There is one main goal for the project and that is to get the city limits to the interstate,” said Barnes and Thornburg Attorney Nick Kile. “We want to do this in a way that has a minimal affect on people as possible.”

Sheets said there have two main concerns in the meetings so far.

“One of them is land usage,” she said. “I feel like we’ve informed the residents very well about the land usage. It will remain the same unless an owner decides to do that differently. The other is the tax impact. They want to make sure what kind of difference they are going to see in their taxes.”

Probably the most important thing for landowners is the fact that they will not see an increase on their tax bills until 2026.

The four remaining meetings are as follows: Monday, July 20 at Frankfort Community Public Library, 6 p.m.; Thursday, July 23 at Frankfort Neighborhood Center, 10 a.m.; Tuesday, July 28 at Frankfort Community Public Library, 6 p.m.; and Thursday, July 30 at Frankfort Municipal Utilities, 10 a.m.
