The Clinton County Commissioners have issued a countywide ban on open burning, effective immediately, due to dry conditions in the area. The ban will remain in effect until further notice, with the decision to be reevaluated at the commissioners’ discretion.

Currently, 18 counties across Indiana are under active burn bans, highlighting the widespread concern regarding fire safety in our region. The National Integrated Drought Information System says the entire county is currently under moderate or severe drought conditions with August being the tenth driest on record for the past 131 years.

“The rain we received yesterday just isn’t enough to make up for the past few weeks,” says Commissioner Bert Weaver. “Given the number of recent fires and the ongoing dry conditions, it just made good sense to be proactive about preventing future wildfires.”

Any individual found violating the burn ban can be ticketed and will be required to appear before the commissioners at their next scheduled meeting. For further updates on the ban please visit the Clinton County website or contact the county commissioners.
