Fifth-grade students from across Clinton County traded their classrooms for hands-on learning at Camp Cullom on May 12 and 13 as they participated in the annual “Cops and Kids” field trip, an event designed to strengthen relationships between students and local law enforcement while teaching important lessons about safety, teamwork, and character.
The two-day program served all Clinton County fifth-grade students and was organized by Tommy Dillingham, who coordinated with numerous public safety agencies throughout Clinton County and the surrounding area to provide students with an up-close look at careers in law enforcement and emergency services.
Participating agencies included the Frankfort City Police Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police Bomb Squad, Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers, Clinton County SWAT Team, Clinton County 911 Dispatch, Frankfort City Code Enforcement, CSI and Drone units, K9 teams from both Frankfort Police and the Sheriff’s Office, and jail officers representing local facilities.
Throughout the event, students rotated through 10 interactive stations where officers demonstrated equipment, explained investigative techniques, and discussed how each agency works together during emergencies and daily operations.
At the 911 Dispatch station, students learned how emergency calls are handled and how dispatchers coordinate communication between agencies. The OWI station focused on impaired driving and the dangers associated with poor decision-making. CSI and Drone demonstrations gave students a glimpse into crime scene investigations and modern technology used in law enforcement.
One of the most popular stops of the day was the SWAT Team station, where students examined tactical gear and specialized equipment used in high-risk situations. The K9 demonstrations also captured students’ attention as officers explained the differences between police K9s and bomb detection dogs, highlighting the unique training and responsibilities of each.
Conservation Officers from the DNR emphasized outdoor safety and responsible behavior while enjoying Indiana’s natural resources. During their presentation, students and even adults received reminders about bicycle safety and the importance of wearing helmets while riding around town.
At every station, officers reinforced a consistent message to students: success comes through hard work, responsibility, and positive character. Officers reminded students that careers in law enforcement and public safety are earned through dedication, discipline, and commitment.
Teachers and organizers praised the event for fostering meaningful interactions between students and first responders and for exposing students to career opportunities they may not have previously considered.
The day concluded with a dramatic demonstration by the Indiana State Police Bomb Squad, which safely detonated several watermelons to showcase explosive response procedures. In a lighthearted moment honoring Mrs. Donetta Miller’s upcoming retirement, she was invited to press the detonation button for the afternoon’s final explosion.
Following the event, teacher Aubree Buck summed up the experience with a smile, saying, “Wow, what a totally bomb experience!”
